An indirect method that uses the spectral correlation between COD (chemical oxygen demand) and BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) is used to calculate the actual BOD. General biodegradation tests, such as soil respiration or biodegradability of new chemicals, can be conveniently carried out using OxiTop®-IDS systems.

Using the standard BOD method the O.D. concentration will be measured in diluted samples before and after incubation. When carrying out the "BOD self-check measurement" in a closed respirometer, the absorption of carbon leads to a change in gauge pressure. In both cases the samples must be incubated for 5 days at 20°C.
